Frequently Asked Questions

What is ScottyCon?

ScottyCon is an annual anime/video game convention at Carnegie Mellon University founded by Cosplay@CMU, Artist Alley Club, CMU Esports, and Vermillion Anime Club. We aim to provide an affordable single-day convention, collaborating with CMU organizations and the greater Pittsburgh community. In the past, ScottyCon has included an artist alley, cosplay masquerade, live band performances, arcade cabinets, fighting game locals, anime screenings, and craft activities. We are hosted in March at the Carnegie Mellon Cohon University Center.

Is ScottyCon a new convention?

While ScottyCon is relatively new, we have had successful runs in 2019, 2022, 2023, and 2024. It was canceled in 2020 and 2021 because of Covid-19.

Where can I purchase tickets?

Ticket sales for ScottyCon 2025 will open in late January.

Can I request a refund for my ticket?

We cannot refund tickets, except for panelist/artist/performer/volunteer/club representatives who receive a compensated ticket after previously purchasing a ticket online.

How can I apply to table at the Artist Alley?

Please check out the Applications page! Applications for Artist Alley are only open to CMU students.

How can I apply to host a panel/perform at ScottyCon?

Please check out the Applications page! Applications are open to all, although CMU applicants have priority.

Do I need to purchase tickets if I have been accepted as a panelist/artist/performer/volunteer/club representative?

No, you do not need to purchase tickets. Instructions for a free ticket will be emailed in the Spring. If your club has been accepted to host an activity, we can provide a certain number of free tickets (details to be communicated at a later date). Note that we cannot provide free tickets to masquerade participants.

Can I attend if I don't go to CMU?

Yes! Please come see all the hard work that CMU students have put together.

Why do CMU students receive a ticket discount?

CMU students receive a discount because ScottyCon is partially funded by their Student Activities Fee, a university student attendance fee.

Why are tickets no longer free?

In order to afford more activity supplies and bring in more arcade cabinets, we require more funding than the school can provide us. Solely merch orders and sponsorships are unfortunately insufficient to entirely cover those costs. Therefore, we charge tickets at a low price to ensure we have enough funding to run the convention.

Are vaccinations required to attend?

CMU expects visitors to be fully vaccinated. While ScottyCon will not officially check your vaccination status, you may be asked by school authorities to show a proof of vaccination. Please visit CMU's visitor protocol for more information. Masks are highly recommended.
